[Letter] 1914 January 5, Croton, New York [to] Mr. [Edwin] Markham, [Staten Island] / Sinclair. 1914.

Received his notes; will copy what he needs; will safeguard copyright; will use "Man With the Hoe" and passages from "Desire of Nation". Markham replys on same page saying that he dosn't have to copy what he needs he suggests that he just keep what he needs and return the rest. Markham expresses joy to see that he has his eyes on "The Desire of Nations."

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901). He became a well-known reader of his own poems and lecturer of idealistic views, but his creative output for remainder of life ...
